In the early 7th century Vaghbata, the physician and the author of the text Ashtangahridaya visited Kerala and appointed 18 families of well-known physicians to the 18 provinces of Kerala. The physicians of these families were called Ashtavaidyas. Today there are 6 families who still follow the tradition and actively practice Ashtanga-Vaidyam.

Prominent among them is the family of Ashtavaidyan Thaikattu Mooss at Thaikkattussery in Trichur District.

In the year 1924, the Viceroy of India, Lord Reading, bestowed the title of Vaidyaratnam on the then doyen of the family-Ashtavaidyan Narayanan Mooss.

His son E.T. Neelakandhan Mooss founded the Vaidyaratnam Oushadasala in 1941. In recognition to his contributions to Ayurveda the Govt. Of India conferred on him the title of Padmashri in 1992.

The family of Thaikkattu Mooss, a legend in its own, is engaged in the practice of Ayurveda, the science of life, mastered by ancient Indian saints. Our tradition dates back to the days of Lord Parasurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, believed to have recovered Kerala, the land renowned for the growth of Ayurveda. And the saga still continues in its entire glory with much prosperity. History authenticates the excellence of our physicians as their services were sought after by most of the kings and nobles of the bygone era.

Widely regarded as the oldest form of healthcare in the world, Ayurveda is an intricate medical system that originated in India thousands of years ago. Ayurveda can be defined as a system, which uses the inherent principles of nature, to help maintain health in a person by keeping the individual's body, mind and spirit in perfect equilibrium with nature. Ayurveda is a simple, practical science of life, the principles and practices of which evolved through many centuries.Ayurvedic science is based on eternal wisdom of people who acquired the knowledge from experience and meditation.

It is well established by the modern science beyond any doubt that one's mind has a very strong influence on his body. With this knowledge rediscovered, Ayurveda is fast emerging as a holistic alternative to all other systems of medicine. With its enormous understanding on human mind, body and spirit, Ayurveda offers treatment for almost all known diseases.

Eight Branches of Ayurveda :

There are eight branches (Ashtangas) in Ayurveda. They are Kaya Chikitsa (General Medicine), Bala Chikitsa (Peadiatrics), Graha Chikitsa (Occult and Tantric Medicine), Oordhwanga Chikitsa (ENT), Salya Chikitsa (Surgery), Damshtra Chikitsa (Toxicology), Jara Chikitsa (Geriatrics) and Vrisha Chikitsa (Aphrodisiac Tratment). Our physicians belong to the rare tradition of the Ashtavaidyas - those equally proficient in all the eight branches of Ayurveda.
